Why study pulsars optically ?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Observations of the five confirmed optical pulsars indicate that the peak emission scales according to the magnetic field strength at the light cylinder. To the accuracy that such low number allows we show that this gives gives further confirmation that a straightforward synchrotron model such as Pacini & Salvati (1987) still has validity. The derived relationships indicates that the emission mechanism is common across all of the pulsars and towards the edge of the light cylinder. In the future observations should include near and far infra red work to determine the long wave self absorption cutoff and polarization observations of all pulsars to restrict (to first order) emission zone geometry

Recent Results on the Anomalous X–ray Pulsars
∼ 50 accreting pulsars in X–ray binaries have massive companion stars. They are therefore classified as High Mass X–ray Binaries (HMXRB). In most cases this is based on the observation of their optical counterparts. Ten X–ray pulsars are optically identified with OB supergiant stars, while Be companions have been found for ∼20 pulsars. Many of the optically unidentified X–ray pulsars are inferr...
متن کاملA Sociological Study of the Optically Emitting Isolated Neutron Stars
Although less than 1 % of all radio pulsars are detected at optical wavelengths, their optical emission can yield a wealth of information that is either very difficult or plainly impossible to obtain at other wavelengths.
متن کاملX-ray Pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
XMM-Newton archival data for the Small Magellanic Cloud have been examined for the presence of previously undetected X-ray pulsars. One such pulsar, with a period of 202 s, is detected. Its position is consistent with an early B star in the SMC and we identify it as a high mass X-ray binary (HMXB). In the course of this study we determined the pulse period of the possible AXP CXOU J010043.1-721...
متن کامل3 High Mass X - ray Binary Pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We report two additions to the class of accreting X-ray pulsars from the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud with periods of 263 and 202 s. (Recently Haberl & Pietsch (2004) reported the 263 s pulsar.) The source positions of these two pulsars are consistent with early B stars in the SMC and therefore we identify them as high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). Properties of an ensemble of 24 opti...
متن کاملMotion of the hot spot and spin torque in accreting millisecond pulsars
The primary concern of this contribution is that accreting millisecond pulsars (AMXPs) show a much larger amount of information than is commonly believed. The three questions to be addressed are: 1. Is the apparent spin torque observed in AMXPs real ? 2. Why do we see correlations and anti-correlations between fractional amplitudes and timing residuals in some AMXPs ? 3. Why the timing residual...
